Carlo Ancelotti was in no mood to praise his Real Madrid side's performance against RB Leipzig despite reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Los Blancos drew 1-1 with their Bundesliga opponents at the Bernabeu to secure a 2-1 aggregate victory, with Vinicius Junior's wonderful second-half strike cancelled out by a Willi Orban header.

Leipzig were undeniably the better team on the night, mustering 20 shots on goal compared to their hosts' total 12.

And Ancelotti is well aware his team failed to deliver a display expected of them, particularly with star man Jude Bellingham returning to the starting XI after missing the first leg through injury.

The Italian coach, 64, said: "The game was bad. We played poorly, with little intensity and with little concern.

"The psychological aspect has affected us a lot. We were playing against an opponent who has quality and has nothing to lose. We played with brakes on from the beginning.

"We struggled, but the important thing was to be in the quarter-finals.

"The mental aspect has been important. Leipzig have tried everything, they're a good team. We have to calmly assess what has happened.

"At this point in the season we are seven points clear in the league and we are in the quarter-finals. You have to be self-critical, but not too much."

Real's draw with Leipzig means they have only tasted victory in two of their last five outings across all competitions.

Los Blancos have even drawn two of the last three in LaLiga but still comfortably lead Girona and fierce rivals Barcelona in the table.

However, performances will need to start improving soon if Real want to compete in the latter stages of the Champions League — a tournament they have won a record 14 times.
