Bundesliga Matchday 31: A statistical guide to this weekend's matches

Bayern Munich can clinch their ninth consecutive Bundesliga title if they beat Mainz on Saturday.

Schalke are the only other team in the German top flight to already know their fate after they had their first relegation in 30 years confirmed in midweek. 

Koln currently occupy the other relegation spot but four more clubs are within touching distance. 

The scramble for survival could go down to the last day, as could the race for Champions League football. 

Borussia Dortmund are currently four points off the top four and face third-placed Wolfsburg on Saturday, in what can only be described as a must-win for Edin Terzic’s men.

Ahead of a big weekend, we have got all the facts and stats you need to know.

Friday's game

Augsburg vs Koln (7.30pm)

Mainz vs Bayern Munich (Saturday, 2.30pm)

Over the last four seasons, Bayern have scored 22 goals in five matches against their hosts this weekend. 

They romped to a 5-2 victory earlier in the season with Robert Lewandowki netting a double on the day. 

The Bavarians’ No9 is back in training following a knee injury and coach Hansi Flick hopes the goal machine will be part of the squad for what could be the day they secure their 31st title. 

In his absence, Bayern have scored just seven goals in four Bundesliga outings. In Lewandowski’s last four domestic appearances prior to injury, the champions-elect netted 16 times. 

Wolfsburg vs Borussia Dortmund (Saturday, 2.30pm)

This is a season-defining game for Wolfsburg. 

Oliver Glasner’s men could either finish the day one point behind second-placed RB Leipzig or, alternatively, only two points ahead of the team they welcome to the Volkswagen Arena. 

A win all but guarantees them a top-four finish. 

The visitors make the trip in better form, having won their last three outings in the Bundesliga. Wolfsburg’s 3-1 win over Stuttgart in midweek brought a two-match losing streak to an end. 

After the 2-0 loss to Dortmund in the first game of 2021, Die Wolfe went on a nine-match unbeaten run, accumulating 21 points along the way and rising up the table.

Erling Haaland has never scored against Wolfsburg and has netted just two in his last four outings for BVB, meaning he now finds himself trailing both Lewandowski (35) and Andre Silva (24) in the scoring charts. 

Bayer Leverkusen vs Eintracht Frankfurt (Saturday, 5.30pm)

A win for the hosts keeps their top-four hopes alive. Victory for the visitors all but secures a place in the Champions League.

Leverkusen’s campaign has been one of two halves. Unbeaten in their opening 12 matches, they topped the Bundesliga at one point. 

Since then, they have lost nine of 18 games — a run of form that cost Peter Bosz his job. 

In the four games since their managerial change, B04 have picked up seven points, only losing to Bayern Munich. 

But Frankfurt are one of the form sides in the Bundesliga. They have only lost twice since the turn of the year and have won 12 of the 17 the have played in that period. 

Along the way they have defeated Bayern, Dortmund and Wolfsburg. 

Silva, 25, is spearheading their pursuit for a top-four finish and he has been involved in seven goals in his last five starts for Die Adler. He is directly responsible for 39.3% of the goals scored by Adi Hutter’s side this term.

RB Leipzig vs VfB Stuttgart (Sunday, 2.30pm)

A little over a month ago, RB Leipzig were in a genuine title race with Bayern Munich. 

Over the last five games, Die Roten Bullen rank ninth in the form table having only picked up seven points. Julian Nagelsmann’s charges went from averaging 1.88 goals per 90 minutes to just 1.2. 

As a result, not only have they fallen at the last hurdle of their title challenge, their grip on second place is not quite as strong as it once was. 

Fortunately for the Red Bull-owned team, they are acing a side in worse form.

In fact, only Werder Bremen (zero) have picked up fewer points than Stuttgart (three) in the last month.
