Everton extended their unbeaten start to the season as they beat Brighton 0-2 at the Amex.

New signing Demarai Gray continued his great start for the Toffees as he opened the scoring just before half-time.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin then scored his third goal of the season from the penalty spot - after a tussle with Richarlison over who was to take the spot-kick.

The result takes Everton to joint-top and manager Rafa Benitez was thrilled come the end of the game.

He said: "I think that the performance was great. I think that the players deserved the three points.

"The way that we were working on the pitch, the way that we were trying to play was very good.

"The team has very good spirit, very good desire and organisation.

"They try to do what they have to do for the benefit of the team, so really pleased. We won, clean sheet - a lot of positives."

For the first time in the ninth Premier League meeting between Brighton and Everton, the away side came out victorious.

Brighton suffered their first home Premier League defeat since March against Leicester.

Everton have only lost two of their last 17 away Premier League matches (W10 D5); since the start of last season, only Manchester City (14) have won more away Premier League games than the Toffees (12).

For a second consecutive season, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored in each of Everton’s first three Premier League matches.

Everton winger Demarai Gray scored in consecutive Premier League appearances for the first time since December 2017, when he did so for Leicester City against Burnley and Newcastle United.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin became the first Everton player to score a penalty in consecutive Premier League appearances since Leighton Baines in November 2017.
