Antonio Rudiger left Wembley ruing the missed chances that cost Chelsea the Carabao Cup.

The Blues wasted a host of good openings yesterday before Liverpool edged a nail-biting penalty shootout 11-10 after 120 minutes of action failed to produce a goal.

Mason Mount put a golden opportunity wide and also hit the woodwork, while Kai Havertz and substitute Romelu Lukaku had goals disallowed for offside.

Rudiger, who netted from the spot during the shootout, said: "I have to be honest, we had so many good chances.

"I feel like this is a repeat of the whole season because we always create good chances. I think this is the only negative thing about this game.

"We showed commitment, we fought until the last minute but we just couldn't get that bit of luck to get the goal we needed."

Chelsea had Edouard Mendy to thank for keeping them on level terms with a string of fine saves throughout the match.

He was replaced shortly before the end of extra-time, with penalty expert Kepa Arrizabalaga summoned from the bench as a shootout loomed.

And while the Spaniard's introduction failed to produce the saves Blues boss Thomas Tuchel was banking on, Rudiger refused to point the finger at his team-mate for blasting the decisive penalty over the bar.

The German international, 28, added: "We knew from the beginning that this would be a difficult challenge and it would be an open game.

"It could go either way but I think we had the clearer chances. At the end of the day, this is also their [Liverpool's] luck.

"It was an intensive game and an open game. When it gets to a penalty shootout, anything can happen."

Chelsea will look to bounce back from their Wembley heartache when they head to Luton in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday night.
