Man City 3-1 Man Utd: Shaw clinches City landmark in derby victory

Khadija Shaw became Manchester City’s record women’s goalscorer and Jess Park netted her first Women’s Super League goals for the club in a 3-1 derby victory over Manchester United.

City’s win in front of a crowd of 40,086 at the Etihad Stadium was their 11th in a row in the league and puts them three points ahead of Chelsea, who play West Ham on Sunday.

Park was the star of the show, the young midfielder in the right place for two neat finishes late in the first half, while seconds after the break Shaw scored her 68th goal in just 81 matches for the club, taking her clear of Georgia Stanway.

A Kerstin Casparij own goal in the 74th minute gave hope to United but this was another disappointing afternoon and they now sit 15 points behind their neighbours.

City were dealt a blow in the warm-up when Laia Aleixandri picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Alanna Kennedy, and the hosts made a nervy start.

Geyse came into the United side in their only change from last weekend’s win over Bristol City and she gave Leila Ouahabi a torrid time down the right.

Her jinking run and cross set up the first clear chance in the 13th minute, with Nikita Parris finding space in the box and firing in a shot that was well saved at the near post by Khiara Keating.

Geyse then volleyed wide shortly afterwards but City slowly began to establish some control and Park tested Mary Earps for the first time after 27 minutes, the United goalkeeper pushing aside a dipping effort from 30 yards.

It was City who made the breakthrough in the 37th minute. Neat build-up play ended with Ouahabi sending in a cross from the left that was volleyed in first time by Park, although the goal should have been disallowed for offside against Shaw earlier in the move.

The flag did go up when Shaw had the ball in the net moments later but, after another Keating save to deny Geyse, City grabbed their second just before the break.

A short corner was worked to Yui Hasegawa, whose cross was headed on by Kennedy and again met by the right foot of Park.

United needed a strong start to the second half but instead they were torn apart again only seconds after the restart, this time Park the creator with a through ball for Shaw, who showed her strength before slotting past Earps.

The visitors were in danger of being humiliated but they steadied the ship before pulling one back in the 73rd minute when Hannah Blundell’s cross-shot from wide on the left was deflected past Keating by Casparij.

United pushed for a second that would have set up a grandstand finish but City held firm.
