World number one Jannik Sinner has barely been tested on his way to the French Open semi-finals, winning all five matches in routine fashion, but standing in his way of a first Roland Garros title decider is 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.

Sinner had to serve a three-month suspension on the back of his Australian Open triumph and, in what is only his second tournament appearance since January, things could hardly be going better.

The Italian has recorded five straight-set victories and he has not lost more than eight games in any of those encounters, suggesting that he is determined to make up for lost time.

Djokovic may be considered a declining force at 38 years of age, but he was dominant in his four-set win over last season’s runner-up Alexander Zverev in the quarter-final and should never be ruled out.

The Serbian superstar warmed up for Paris with a title triumph at the Geneva Open and that form has transpired in the French capital, with that latest victory over Zverev evidence that he is in the best shape he has been for a while.

The stats

Sinner and Djokovic are locked level at four wins apiece in their personal series, although the Italian has triumphed in three of their last four meetings.

Having won the Geneva Open in preparation for Paris, Djokovic is on a nine-match winning streak.

Top seed Sinner has lost only one of his last 35 matches on the ATP Tour, with that defeat coming against Carlos Alcaraz in the Rome final last month.

Djokovic has failed to win a set in only one of his eight previous meetings with Sinner.

Twelve of Sinner’s last 13 wins on the ATP Tour have been recorded in straight sets.

Djokovic is a 24-time Grand Slam champion, having won the French Open on three occasions in 2016, 2021 and 2023.

Sinner is yet to reach the French Open final, although this is his second consecutive semi-final appearance following last season’s five-set defeat to Alcaraz.

Prediction

Sinner has returned to the ATP Tour with a vengeance following his three-month ban, and on the back of five straight-set wins at Roland Garros, the feeling is that he will be too strong for the ageing legs of Djokovic.

However, Djokovic had recorded four straight-set victories before needing four sets to edge past quarter-final rival Zverev and is also playing to a supremely high level.

Zverev could force only three break-point opportunities, with his only break of serve coming in the opening game of that quarter-final, and that is evidence of how well Djokovic is performing.

The 38-year-old must be feeling pretty happy with where his game is following nine consecutive wins and his unlimited experience at Grand Slam level has to count for something.

Sinner may be operating close to the peak of his powers and is still going to be a tough nut to crack, but Djokovic can ensure he has to dig deep.
