West Ham vs Liverpool predictions: Reds can keep title hopes alive

Two clubs with managerial speculation surrounding them meet in Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off, with West Ham and Liverpool going head-to-head at the London Stadium.

The two teams have faltered domestically and crashed out of Europe in the last month and this looks like a big game for both sides.

Liverpool’s need is greater though, with only a win likely to be good enough to keep their fading title hopes alive and they will hope to maintain a good recent run over the Hammers.

Team news

David Moyes is expected to make several changes to his starting line-up following their heavy 5-2 defeat at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Jarrod Bowen has missed the last two Premier League games due to a back injury, but the England international is expected to return to the squad on Saturday.

There is also likely to be a change between the posts, with Alphonse Areola ready to return in place of Lukasz Fabianski.

A 2-0 Merseyside derby defeat at Everton is also likely to signal changes in the Reds’ starting XI, with Jurgen Klopp looking for a reaction.

Diogo Jota is still sidelined by a hip injury, but Cody Gakpo could come back into contention after missing the defeat to Everton following the birth of his child.

The likes of Wataru Endo, Harvey Elliott and Ryan Gravenberch are also pushing for starts.

Liverpool have lost just three of their 17 Premier League away games this season.

On five occasions on the road, Liverpool have won and both teams have scored, while in 12 of their 17 away games both teams have found the net.

West Ham have won just one of their last eight Premier League home games, that was a 4-2 success over Brentford in February.

The two teams have met seven times at the London Stadium, with Liverpool winning five of those games, with one draw and one West Ham victory.

The Merseysiders have won nine of the last 10, and each of the last five encounters between the two across all competitions, which includes a 3-1 success in the reverse league fixture back in September as well as a 5-1 rout at Anfield in the Carabao Cup just before Christmas.

Prediction

With the Liverpool squad knowing Klopp will be leaving this summer and West Ham looking likely to part ways with Moyes, there is an air of uncertainty in both camps.

The visitors though know they need a win if they are to keep on the coattails of Arsenal and Manchester City, while the Hammers’ hopes of European qualification look to have dissipated.

Both managers will want a response, but the added pressure of a frustrated West Ham crowd may work against the hosts.

As well as West Ham’s poor recent record against Liverpool, Moyes has also endured a tough time against the Reds — winning just six of his 42 games against them as a manager.
