England defender Harry Maguire says "banter" from Scotland fans during Tuesday's 3-1 win at Hampden Park took the pressure off his team-mates.

The half-time substitute was mocked by the vociferous home crowd either side of his second-half own goal but believes he can deal with the treatment he received.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate described the situation as "a joke" after the game but the Manchester United centre-back was less concerned.

Maguire said: "It pretty much takes the pressure away from my team-mates and puts it all on myself. It makes them play better, for sure.

"It is a little bit of banter and it is a hostile environment, coming away to Scotland, but we have dominated from start to finish.

"We knew it would be hostile and in the second half I got most of it. I am happy to go with that, don't worry about that."

Maguire has played a handful of minutes for Erik ten Hag's Red Devils so far this season and Southgate has been questioned for selecting a player who features so little for his club.

West Ham did offer the defender a way out of Old Trafford over the summer but he revealed an agreement could not be found and that United were happy for him to stay.

Maguire added: "Of course, my England career is a big priority — and so is my club career.

"I considered everything and I know, at the moment, when I have not started a game in the first four games of the season, the story comes to me.

"The first four weeks were hard because it was one game a week and the manager didn't select me but we have lots of games coming up now and I am sure I will play lots."

United are back in action at home to Brighton on Saturday before they kick off their Champions League campaign at Bayern Munich next Wednesday.
